Retrofit complete at ecoMotion Biodiesel plant

BioEnergy International (BDI) has completed the expansion of a biofuel plant in Spain. Oils and animal fats with very high free fatty acid (FFA) content will be converted into second generation, standard compliant biodiesel.

ecoMotion Biodiesel, part of the international Saria Group, commissioned BDI with the installation of a high free fatty acid (FFA) esterification unit in its plant in Barcelona.

This technological in-house development from BDI allows biodiesel producers to utilise challenging oils and fats without a limit on FFAs, whilst retaining a high quality of biodiesel.

BDI was commissioned with building the multi-feedstock biodiesel plant in Barcelona in 2002 and, in 2006, increased the overall plant capacity to 31,000 tonnes per year.

Following the retrofit of ecoMotion Biodiesel's plant, the raw material flexibility has increased considerably. Now, very difficult raw materials, such as animal fats, can be processed into second generation biodiesel.

The project was completed on time and was handed over following a successful acceptance run. As part of the order, the complete process control system of the plant was also brought up to date.

'Biodiesel producers are currently facing major challenges as a result of uncertainties with regard to the future European biofuel policy. However, the use of waste and residual materials is safeguarded due to the positive environmental aspects,' says Dr. Edgar Ahn, member of the board (CSO).
