Renewable jet fuel flight to take off at Rio+20
Rio+20, the United Nations conference on sustainable development, will host a renewable jet fuel flight demonstration this month in Brazil.
The fuel, which has been sourced and provided from Brazilian sugarcane by renewable products company Amyris, has passed all testing and will be used in an Azul Airlines craft. The demonstration is also being backed by commercial jet manufacturer Embraer and engine provider GE.
Amyris claim its renewable jet fuel is compliant with Jet A/A-1 fuel specifications and will provide equivalent performance versus conventional petroleum-derived fuel across a range of metrics, including fit-for-purpose properties and greenhouse gas emission reduction potential.
Rio+20 will be held in Rio de Janeiro from 20 to 22 June.
