PTTAR to produce green aviation fuel

With the European aviation regulations looming, the CEO of Thailand-based PTT Aromatics and Refinery (PTTAR) Chainoi Puankosoom has announced that the company is planning a $150 million (€117.6 million) investment to produce the first jet biofuel and biodiesel to comply with these mandates.

Using technology that was developed by PTTAR’s parent company PTT, the jet fuel will be made from left over hydrogen and condensate residue from its petrochemical and oil refinery production.

Puankosoom commented: ‘This technology will not only provide a high grade of biofuel for jet engines but our product quality will also be similar to diesel used effectively in freezing temperatures.’

PTTAR’s board is set to discuss the company’s investment proposition in October later this year, after which the environmental and health impact assessment reports will take one year, in addition to the 18-month construction period.

The EU aviation regulations will come into force in 2012, after which airline firms will be forced to pay penalties if they do not use biofuel.
