PetroAlgae ready to commercialise biofuel from lemna

US-based second-generation biofuel company PetroAlgae is investigating the use of microcrops other than algae as feedstocks. PetroAlgae claims its technology, which uses the miniature flowering plant lemna, is ready for commercialisation.

PetroAlgae currently operates two labs and one customer demonstration facility, all in the US state of Florida. The customer demonstration facility includes an end-to-end system, from the growing and harvesting of the lemna in ponds to the manufacture of the fuel.

The manufacturing process involves cracking the mash, a process which can be done in the unmodified coker unit of a standard oil refinery. The resulting fuels are drop-in replacements for ordinary petrol and diesel.

PetroAlgae insists its fuel is competitive with oil at $70 (€49) a barrel.
