OMV Petrom has confirmed major construction progress on its new sustainable fuels unit at the Petrobrazi refinery in Romania.
The €560 million project will create a 250,000‑tonne‑per‑year facility producing SAF and renewable diesel (HVO) from vegetable oils and used cooking oil, supported by green hydrogen. Foundations are complete and key process equipment — including columns and reactors up to 60 metres high—has been installed.
The flexible unit will be able to switch product slate between SAF, HVO, bio‑naphtha and bio‑LPG depending on market demand and feedstock availability, delivering at least 65% lifecycle CO₂ reductions versus fossil fuels.
Commissioning is targeted for 2028, alongside new electrolyser capacity for green hydrogen at Petrobrazi.
OMV Petrom positions the project as a cornerstone in transforming the refinery into a regional hub for low‑carbon fuels serving aviation and heavy transport.
“Petrobrazi is going through one of the most important transformations in its recent history. With a €560 million investment, we are building a new unit that will produce 250,000 tonnes per year of sustainable fuels made from renewable feedstocks.
“These lower carbon fuels will contribute to reducing emissions in sectors where electrification is difficult, such as aviation and heavy transport.
“We have completed the foundations, for which approximately 20,000 cubic meters of concrete were poured, and equipment up to 60 meters high is already installed in the refinery.
“This is a project through which we are gradually adapting Petrobrazi to the new requirements of the market and of the energy transition, including through the development of sustainable fuels production,” said Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board.
