Novozymes forecast Brazilian bagasse boom
Novozymes, which sells enzymes that turn crops such as corn, soya and sugarcanes into bio-ethanol products, expect Brazil to be able to start large-scale production of biofuel made from sugarcane residues, in addition to the existing production from sugar itself within two to three years.
The development would depend on the industry’s ability to attract the needed investments and political support,
Global investment in ethanol has increased significantly over the last eight years, rising from $430 million in 2001 to $14,100 million in 2007 – with Brazil in a prominent global position.
In Brazil, the proportion of bioethanol used in transport fuel is already at 50% which is much higher than the 7% in the US, 2% in China, and 1% in Europe, putting Brazil in a clear first position globally.
