National Wind goes into biodiesel

US-based National Wind Solutions (NWND) has bought an undisclosed biodiesel plant in Texas for $3 million (€2.1 million) and has announced its intention to convert it to produce biodiesel from second-generation feedstock.

After successfully producing soyabean biodiesel for commercial transportation uses, the plant was mothballed by its original producers because of the high cost of soyabeans.

Now NWND intends to retrofit the plant with the necessary equipment to process second-generation feedstocks such as algae and jatropha into biodiesel. The company hopes that the ability to use a wide variety of feedstocks will inoculate it again price spikes in any one feedstock.

NWND will seek to expand operations into other states by building on this initial technology platform in months ahead.
