Mozambique approves National Biofuel Policy and Strategy
The Mozambican Government approved a National Biofuel Policy and Strategy on 24 March, with the aim of ramping-up production on a nationwide-scale.
The strategy establishes a regulatory framework for production of biofuels by the public and private sectors, based on principles of transparency, social and environmental protection, Government spokesman, Luis Covane, comments.
The Mozambican government also decided to create the National Biofuel CounciI, a body that will coordinate, supervise and evaluate the policy and strategy, which focus on production of ethanol and biodiesel, he said.
Biofuel production will be carried out in three stages. The first will be the pilot phase, which will last until 2015, followed by the operational period, until 2020 and, later, expansion of production.
‘This instrument is centred on promotion of ethanol and biodiesel produced from agricultural raw materials appropriate for the country’s agcricultural and climate conditions,’ Covane explains.
The document sets out the guidelines of the country’s biofuel policy, namely its compatibility with food production, as well as a map of land that is apt for use to grow the chosen crops jatropha, coconut, sugarcane, sorghum and sunflowers.
