MDM to build ethanol plant

A former fish farm in south Hillsborough County, Florida, US, could soon be home to a new biofuels plant, following a proposal from Mad Dog Mulching (MDM).

Carlos Macho, owner of MDM, and his partner Jason Davis are looking to build an ethanol production facility on the 120-acre site. Though still in the very early stages, the county’s Environmental Protection Commission issued a permit on 21 December 2010 granting MDM permission to fill in hundreds of old fishponds.

The plant would be built to handle 40 million bushels of corn annually, creating between 200 and 250 jobs.

However, as Macho explains, ‘I need 210,000 acres in the state of Florida to grow corn. I could create 5,000 jobs. We really would like to expand even bigger.’

Macho is hoping to have purchased the land by the end of March.
