Maverick plans pilot plant

Maverick Biofuels, a second generation biofuels technology company, is planning to construct a biomass-to-biofuel pilot plant in North Carolina, US.

Although the firm has not yet decided on a specific location Karl von Gunten, the vice president of marketing at Maverick, explains that a site at or near a landfill is most likely.

The actual size of the plant will be unknown until an investment has been secured but Maverick is already in talks with potential investors such as venture capitalists, whose investment would go towards financing the build. Von Gunten did not wish to comment on the amount of capital that Maverick is seeking in its first round of financing.

Production at the new plant is planned to begin 18 months after a site has been chosen and although the capacity is unknown, it is hoped that the pilot facility will have the capacity to produce between 180,000 and 300,000 gallons of biofuel a year.

Maverick’s mixed-alcohol biofuel is made up of ethanol, propanol, and butanol, in addition to other alcohols. It can be blended with petrol at higher levels than ethanol and, according to Von Gunten, can completely replace fossil fuels in flex-fuel vehicles. He explains that the mixed-alcohol fuel produced at the plant with Maverick’s technology is a second generation biofuel produced from waste that would otherwise be sent to landfill.
