Largest ethanol plant in Northern Europe nears operations

One of the world's most energy-efficient ethanol plants is set for start-up in Norrköping, Sweden.

Sweden-based manufacturer Lantmännen Agroetanol will produce more than 3 million litres of ethanol a week, using technology from Vogelbusch, making it the largest ethanol plant in north Europe.

Initially the plant was due to come on line before the end of 2008, but is now likely to reach full capacity in early 2009.

At maximum capacity the plant will be able to produce almost half a million litres of ethanol a day from grain. A biomass-fuelled power station supplies the energy required for the process.

A multi-pressure system from Austria-based Vogelbusch plays a key part in cutting process energy consumption. Vogelbusch and Lantmännen Agroetanol began working on the project in 2006.

The multi-pressure system uses over 50% less steam than conventional technologies, generating equivalent savings in the energy required to produce it. The plant's energy-saving properties are further boosted by the optimum thermal integration of the distillation and dehydration processes.

Vogelbusch has been active in the ethanol industry since 1921. The company was one of the first to handle ethanol in the boom of the 1970s, with a subsidiary in the US. Vogelbusch was involved in three start-ups in the US in 2007.
