LanzaTech to make biofuel from coal

The New Zealand-based clean tech firm LanzaTech has signed a memorandum of understanding with one of the largest coal manufacturers in China, Henan Coal and Chemical Industrial, to produce ethanol.

Using Henan Coal’s coal gasification technology and its own biological fermentation process, the new plant will create ethanol fuel and other chemical products from syngas derived from coal.

The deal will see LanzaTech further expand its energy operations in the nation and is reported to be the world’s first coal-to-biofuel project – an alternative application to burning it for the generation of electricity.

The news comes after LanzaTech signed a letter of intent with CAS and Baosteel in July earlier this year to build a demonstration plant producing ethanol from steel mill gases.

In 2009 Henan Coal was listed as China’s second biggest coal firm and is Asia’s largest company using coal for the production of syngas.
