Lake Erie Biofuels considers pipeline

Pennsylvania-based Lake Erie Biofuels is considering construction of a pipeline that would carry its biofuels products to Lake Erie's port facilities as an alternative to railroad cars.

Raymond Schreckengost executive director of the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority says the company is now transporting about 1.5 million to 2 million gallons of biofuels a month by railroad cars to the port for shipment.

The pipeline would probably be about 6 inches in diameter and would follow the path of an existing sewer line that extends from the former International Paper Co. property, where the biofuels plant is located, to the city's wastewater treatment plant and then to the port's facilities.

A storage tank would be also be built at the port in conjunction with the pipeline.

The $60 million (€40.7 million) biofuels plant, which began its operations in November, had its first biofuels shipment through the port in December.

Lake Erie Biofuels uses ingredients such as soybean oil to produce biodiesel, which is mixed with petroleum diesel in a blend that can contain 5-20% biodiesel."
