KSC and Tereos talk bioethanol

Poland’s state-owned sugar maker Krajowa Spolka Cukrowa (KSC) is in talks with France-based producer Tereos to refine sugar from cane and to cooperate in biofuel production.

KSC and Tereos are discussing joining forces to produce the sugar from Poland and fulfill EU production capacity quotas.

The company has had to cut back production of beet sugar and has spare capacity under EU output quotas.

The companies are also investigating a collaboration on the production of biogas.

KSC is the leading sugar maker in Poland with 39% of the market.

Its four competitors Sudzucker Polska, Pfeifer & Langen, British Sugar and Nordzucker are all foreign-owned.

The talks plan to conclude in September after the current 2008/2009 season ends.
