King’s Speech reveals plan for the introduction of a SAF Bill

A Bill will be introduced to support sustainable aviation fuel production through the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Revenue Support Mechanism) Bill.
This was revealed by King Charles in the House of Commons in the UK during his first King’s Speech under a new Labour Government during the State Opening of Parliament on July 17.
This will be done through introducing a revenue certainty mechanism, something biofuel players need in order to raise finance for their projects.
At present there is only one UK producer of SAF, Phillips 66, at their Humber refinery.
Noaman Al Adhami, Alfanar’s UK Country Head, said: “Today’s confirmation that a SAF revenue support mechanism bill will be introduced in the upcoming Parliamentary session is a strong signal of intent from the new Government that it is committed to building a UK SAF production industry.
"We are developing the largest and most advanced SAF project in Europe on Teesside with a £1.5bn investment, which could reach Final Investment Decision in 2025 and be operational as soon as 2028.
"Given our project timelines, and in light of policy incentives now in place in other markets, it is now critical that the bill is introduced at pace – providing support from 2025 – to ensure leading UK SAF projects like ours can progress on schedule. We look forward to working with the new Government to make this happen.”
