Japan to slash GHG emissions
The Japanese government has implemented a set of guidelines that could see the nation cut its CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to levels in 1990.
Japan is the fifth largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world and is looking to boost the amount of electricity generated from non-fossil fuels in a bid to cut these emissions by 25% by 2020. Currently just 34% of the country’s electricity is produced from renewable sources.
The new mandates will require major power companies to produce at least 50% of their total electricity output from renewable materials by 2020, while smaller utilities will be required to generate over 2% of their electricity from renewables.
The guidelines will also see the gas industry utilising over 80% of gas derived from sewage treatment and other processes by 2015.
The use of bioethanol within the oil industry will increase by a minimum of 3% of annual petrol sales by 2020.
