Jamaica wants to increase biofuels production
In an effort to reduce reliance on petroleum-based fuel in Jamaica its government is seeking billions of dollars for biofuels investment.
Phillip Paulwell , the minister of Science, Technology, Energy, and Mining, was quoted by local news sources as saying that a ‘biofuel energy source, if developed, could attract investments and create job opportunities’.
‘I think we are now on the right path to achieving a tremendous investment in this area and $7-$8 billion (€5.2-6 billion) worth of investment potential is not something that we should be scoffing at and indeed it should be promoted and not just by the government,’ he added.
Paulwell believes Jamaica can no longer depend on fossil fuels to meet its energy needs and the government is further encouraging workshops related to biofuels claiming that they ‘aid lawmakers to formulate policies to efficiently leverage renewable energy sources’.
