Indian Railways to convert to biodiesel

Indian Railways is planning three 20,000 litre a year biodiesel plants to meet its biodiesel requirements.

The company is currently the biggest consumer of diesel in the world, and needs about 60,000 litres of biodiesel every day.

Together with manufacturer Emami, which is aiming at producing 1,500 litres of edible oil and 300 litres of biodiesel oil per day, Indian Railways is looking at Karnataka to meet its biodiesel requirements.

It is keen to provide land and financial assistance to entrepreneurs willing to set up the plants. Some entrepreneurs had evinced interest but needed assurance that the Railways would lift all the 60,000 litres of biodiesel produced across the three plants.

According to Karnataka Biofuel Task Force chairman Y B Ramakrishna, the first plant is likely to be located at Yelahanka, near Bangalore, and may become operational by the middle of next year.

More information on Asian biofuels demand and plant projects can be found at Biofuels International Asia expo & conference from 19-20 November in Singapore.
