Hawaiian Electric chooses REG for biodiesel supply
Hawaiian Electric has chosen Renewable Energy Group (REG) to supply biodiesel to the Hawaiian 110MW combustion turbine at the Campbell Industrial Park Generating Station on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
REG will supply 3-7 million gallons of biodiesel to the station over three years. The company is already supplying biodiesel to the facility for other purposes.
The biodiesel is produced from used cooking oil and animal waste fats and it is anticipated the new contract will begin in July 2012, the date when REG’s existing contract expires.
‘According to the US Energy Information Administration, more than 510 million gallons of foreign petroleum are burned each year for electric power generation. The state should be commended for its leadership in creating a model for other utility companies across the country to follow,’ says Daniel Oh, REG president.
