Growth Design to begin building biodiesel plant

Following its dedication ceremony in July earlier this year, sustainable and renewable energy firm Growth Design Energy expects that construction on its biodiesel plant in the US should begin before 2011.

The $9.3 million (€6.69 million) facility, based in Forest City, Iowa will produce 3 million gallons of biodiesel a year from a number of feedstocks, including animal fat and fat collected from restaurants.

Building work on the plant was due to commence around five months ago, however Iowa’s environmental assessment process took longer than expected. Completion of the environmental process is now expected soon, as is approval from the USDA to peruse funding.

Speaking about the project Shelley Burgess, senior vice president for communication and investor relations at Growth Design, said: ‘Ideally we’d like to have Holland Contracting to have the cement laid before a freeze to allow is to build during the winter.’
