France reaches 4,000 E85 filling stations as availability and demand grows

France has reached a significant milestone in the expansion of low-carbon fuels, with 4,000 service stations nationwide now offering E85.
Thanks to sustained commitment from fuel distributors, E85 is available at 42% of all French forecourts, making it increasingly accessible to motorists seeking a more economical and environmentally responsible fuel option.
With an average price of €0.72 per litre, E85 continues to strengthen household purchasing power.
Based on average annual mileage of 13,000 km, drivers can save around €735 per year compared with using SP95-E10, even after accounting for a 25% increase in consumption.
High-mileage motorists covering 20,000 km annually can save approximately €1,130.
Nearly 93% of French residents now live within 10 km of an E85 station, and the “Mes Stations E85” mobile app offers real-time price updates and location services to support growing demand.
E85 contains between 60% and 85% bioethanol and delivers an average 50% reduction in net CO₂ emissions and up to 90% cuts in particulate emissions compared with fossil petrol.
Motorists can adopt the fuel either by installing an approved flex-E85 conversion unit on compatible vehicles or by opting for flex-fuel models available directly from manufacturers.
French-produced bioethanol is sourced almost entirely from domestic agriculture and uses just 0.66% of national farmland, excluding co-products.
As Europe progresses towards CO₂-neutral fuels for vehicles beyond 2035, work is already under way to develop a fossil-free version of E85, replacing the remaining petrol component with renewable alternatives.
This future fuel pathway will allow drivers to continue using familiar vehicles while further reducing their carbon footprint.
