Ethanol means money in Minnesota

In the US the Minnesota Department of Agriculture estimates that the state will gain $600 million (€465 million) from the growth of its ethanol industry this year.

It estimates production will increase to 1.1 billion gallons in 2010 with an economic impact of $3.1 billion, and providing 1,500 additional jobs.

In 2009 Minnesota's ethanol industry generated more than $2.5 billion in economic activity in 2009 and supported more than 6,800 jobs.

Last year Minnesota processed about 29% of its corn crop into ethanol, expected to rise to one-third this year.

And the US state has significantly increased its consumption of E85 during Q1 and Q2 of 2010, compared with the same timeframe in 2009.

2010’s total for the two quarters reached 437,063 gallons of ethanol, an 86,000 gallon rise from last year’s 350,518 gallons.

However Minnesota’s approximate 2,500 flex-fuel vehicles are consuming just 16.6% of the total fuel used, meaning that 2.2 million gallons (83.4%) of fossil vehicle fuel was still used in the first six months.
