EPA drafts rule to raise advanced biofuels output

The US Environmental Protection Agency has issued a draft rule calling for further use of advanced biofuels and to measure carbon dioxide emissions from alternative motor fuels.

The regulatory body’s move looks to reduce the impact biofuels have on the climate and food prices.

The move confirms the schedule of the 2007 Renewable Fuels Standard which called for the blending of 136 billion litres per year of biofuels into petrol by 2022.

Ethanol made from corn will still play an important role in the mandate, but the rule also aims to make traditional bio-refineries run on cleaner fuels other than fossil fuels.

The mandate calls for 68 billion litres of traditional ethanol blending per year by 2015 and 72 billion litres of cellulosic ethanol, or fuel made from non-food crops like switchgrass and fast-growing trees.

The draft rule which is open for public discussion would help the government discover the best way to measure global warming pollution from biofuels.
