Eon progresses with Bristol biomass plans

Energy company Eon has announced that plans to build a biomass-fired power generation facility in Bristol, UK, are on schedule and will begin construction next year pending permission.

The proposed renewable energy plant will have an output of 150MW and will provide enough carbon-neutral electricity to supply more than 200,000 homes.

Eon estimates that by burning wood, the plant will be able to save 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year, while fuel will be transported to the facility by water, further reducing its carbon footprint.

The biomass plant is part of Eon's efforts to cut the amount of carbon released for each KW of electricity generated by 10% between 2005 and 2012.

By 2030, the company intends to reduce the carbon intensity of its electricity by 50% compared to 1990 levels.
