Egypt backs biodiesel production using UCO with new recycling plant

news item image
A new biodiesel facility in Egypt will convert used cooking oil into renewable fuel, following investment by Qatar‑based Al Mana Holding.
The plant, located in the Tenth of Ramadan integrated waste management city, is designed to process up to 100 tonnes of waste oil per day.
According to Egypt’s Ministry of Environment, the project aims to divert significant volumes of used cooking oil away from informal disposal channels and into structured recycling for energy production.
Egypt consumes millions of tonnes of edible oil annually, creating a large and largely untapped waste oil stream suitable for biofuel production.
In addition to constructing the facility, Al Mana plans to develop a nationwide collection network targeting households, restaurants and food manufacturers. A mobile application will be introduced to incentivise safe disposal and improve traceability of feedstock.
The project supports Egypt’s broader efforts to reduce waste, cut emissions from transport fuels and develop a domestic circular economy for bioenergy.
