Dutch autosport industry drives forward in fuel sustainability stakes

The 48th edition of the ELE Rally in the Netherlands hosted races that had cars fuelled by Gasoline Ethanol Methanol (GEM) from second generation biofuels producer BioMCN.

The BioMCN 350Z Challenge saw 14 cars powered by GEM, which consists of the three fuel elements mixed in various ratios to almost match E85 properties but with a significantly lower CO₂ footprint than traditional fossil fuels.

The BioMCN GEM concept has been developed and tested in collaboration with car brand Lotus Engineering since 2011. Production began early this year in partnership with sustainable motor sports promoter GUUTS and the Dutch National Autosport Federation backed the decision to test the GEM fuel.

In a statement a BioMCN spokesperson said this event was ‘an important next step in sustainable autosport and mobility in the Netherlands’.
