Cosan to export ethanol to Japan

Brazil’s largest producer of sugar and ethanol Cosan has signed a three-year contract with Mitsubishi to export bioethanol to the Japanese market starting in 2010.

Cosan will ship around 80,000 kl of bioethanol a year, reports say. Mitsubishi will the import it as the raw material for making ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), a petroladditive used for production of biopetrol.

Brazilian-made ethanol is usually processed into ETBE first and then shipped to Japan.

Cosan exports around 20% of its yearly bioethanol output, mostly to Europe and the US.

Until now Cosan’s business with Asia has been limited to shipments of bioethanol for use as an industrial fuel.
