China launches DDGS anti-dumping probe

China’s Ministry of Commerce has launched an anti-dumping probe into distillers dried grains (DDGS) from the US.

China is the world’s largest importer of DDGS, a by-product of ethanol production, for use in animal feed. Between January and November this year the nation is reported to have imported over 2.9 million tonnes of DDGS – an increase of 542% compared with the same period in 2009. The value of those imports in 2009 was $695 million (€524 million). 2010 saw this rise 650%.

Now the ministry is to investigate DDGS dumping between July 2009 and June 2010. However this time period may be extended in order to study the damage caused to China’s own industry from 2007. Around 3.5 million tonnes of DDGS are produced in China each year.

The investigation is expected to close on 28 December 2011 but the ministry has explained that, under special circumstances, it may not be completed until 28 June 2012.
