Independent fuel distributor in the UK Certas Energy has achieved the EcoVadis ‘Gold Medal’ for its commitments to responsible business practice.

The award places Certas Energy in the top five per cent of businesses reviewed by EcoVadis globally in relation to sustainability performance.

EcoVadis, the world's largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, assesses and evaluates 21 sustainability criteria across four core themes: environment, labour & human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement.

In the past year, Certas Energy has significantly improved its EcoVadis rating from 45/100, otherwise known as ‘committed’, to 78/100, scoring highest for Sustainable Procurement (81/100), as a result of a series of investments and embedding sustainable practices within its procurement processes.

The company has invested heavily in its own fleet and nationwide infrastructure, significantly reducing its own Scope 1 GHG emissions by switching 238 more vehicles from standard diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), increasing the number of depots that supply HVO, and introducing the UK’s first HVO-only bunker in Birmingham.

More than 150,000 companies globally have been rated by EcoVadis. The ratings provide an evidenced-based analysis on performance and an actionable roadmap for continuous improvement.

Richard Garnett, head of sustainability at Certas Energy, said: “EcoVadis is the gold standard for sustainable and responsible business practice, so we are absolutely thrilled to be rated among the top companies worldwide. The advanced due diligence involved as part of this award will give our customers a higher degree of confidence and trust in Certas and continue seeing us as the supplier of choice.”
