Brazil giant eyes Angola ethanol project

Africa’s massive land mass and rich feedstocks have attracted the attention of Brazilian industrial giant Odebrecht.

The company is planning to inject $220million (€149 million) into sugar and ethanol production in Angola amounting to the production of 30 million litres of ethanol a year.

The Brazilian company has set up a joint venture, Biocom, with the Angolan state-owned oil firm Sonangol and private company Damer.

The company intends to farm sugarcane on 30,000 hectares of land in Malange province, some 400 km east of the capital Luanda. A processing plant for sugar and ethanol production will also be set up, and is expected to have an annual processing capacity of 260,000 tonnes of sugar.

The fibrous parts of the sugarcane, as well as the heat from the plant, will be utilised for the production of electricity, with an expected generation capacity of 47MW.

After 27 years of civil war, Angola’s agricultural sector is in need of revitalisation.
