Biofuels research in bamboo begins in Mississippi

A recent report concerning Alcorn State University in Mississippi, US reveals it has conducted research into using bamboo as a feedstock for biofuels production.

The Mississippi Development Authority legislation, in conjunction with next-generation renewable fuels company KiOR’s state-wide research project, has provided the funding for the university to get involved in biofuels research since February.

‘Our focus will be on agronomic practices and logistics, like how do you grow biofuels crops and how do you move those products to market in an efficient,’ Alcorn’s dean of agriculture Barry Bequette was quoted.

Alcorn will utilise two off-site research stations as growing sites and it has secured an internship at KiOR’s research and development site.

Once a chief scientist has been appointed on the project, Alcorn will look to development a biofuels curriculum.
