Biofuel record set by Gulfstream G280 jet

Gulfstream Aerospace has announced that its G280 jet has just set a city-pair record using sustainable alternative jet fuel.

The record was set whilst flying to California’s Van Nuys Airport to participate in ‘Business Jet Fuel Green: A Step Toward Sustainability,’ which was held to promote the use of sustainable alternative jet fuel.

The jet flew 2,243 nautical miles, from Savannah, Georgia, to Van Nuys, California in 4 hours and 49 minutes. Whilst flying, the jet faced average headwinds of 76 knots and its average speed was Mach 0.85.

Gulfstream’s president, Mark Burns said, “Gulfstream has been involved with sustainable alternative jet fuel since June 2011, when a Gulfstream G450 became the first business jet to cross the Atlantic on a blend of the fuel. Since then, we've taken ever-greater steps in supporting sustainability, including securing a dedicated supply of SAJF for our corporate, demonstration and flight-test fleet. Our company aircraft have already flown approximately 700,000 nautical miles on SAJF, saving more than 750 metric tons of carbon dioxide. SAJF is not only better for the environment, but using this fuel to set city-pair records highlights its performance capabilities.”

The company states that by mid-2019 it expects to offer sustainable alternative jet fuel to customers using its Long Beach facility. It also has plans to use the fuel for its large cabin completion flights departing from Long Beach Airport.
