Bahamas Waste online by end of October
When operations do begin it is hoped that some of the 500,000 gallons of imported cooking oil will be replaced.
Earl Deveaux, environment minister, said: ‘We import a significant amount of cooking oil and when we process the waste a lot of it goes out of the country to the likes of Haiti. Thanks to the innovative technology this project presents the opportunity to bring back some of our exported dollars.’ He continued: ‘We spend our money buying cooking oil, we produce a residual and that can now be used in another way rather than going into the waste stream. This helps us in trapping great value in our economy and it helps us in reducing our energy load.’
The biodiesel will be used to fuel the nation’s 50-plus vehicles by the end of 2010.
Equipment was delivered to the refinery earlier this year.
