Alcosuisse proposes first Swiss bioethanol plant
The €66.42 million plant in Delémont, western Switzerland, if approved could produce almost 100,000 tonnes of fuel and 30,000 tonnes of pharmaceutical-grade alcohol annually.
Switzerland has some of the most stringent rules governing so-called agrofuels, with authorities granting tax breaks to companies only if they can prove that their production is environmentally friendly based on land use and gas emissions.
The proposed plant would refine crude sugarcane alcohol imported from Brazil, but there are concerns from environmentalists claiming the bioethanol refinery, though produced from renewable, organic sources, takes up agricultural land that could be used to grow food.
