Aeromexico flies to Costa Rica on 25% biofuel

Mexican airline Aeromexico now offers flights from Mexico City to San Jose, Costa Rica, which use a blend of biofuel and conventional jet fuel.

A Boeing 737 completed the first flight which took place on 27 Septmeber.

Aeromexico has switched to using 25% biofuel in its engines as part of the Green Flights project, which aims to slash greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The airline's first commercial transatlantic flight took place in August when it offered a service from Mexico City to Madrid.

It is thought that 1% of all transport fuel consumed in Mexico by 2015 will be biofuels. Mexico's aviation industry believes this could rise to 15% by 2020.

The country has set renewable targets, which aim to produce 40 million litres of bio-jet fuel in the short-term and 700 million litres in 2020.
