AdP prepares Portuguese waste to energy projects
AdP, which deals in water supply, water and waste treatment, will collaborate with Energias de Portugal and energy company Galp on the projects.
Power generation from biogas formed from the breakdown of organic waste as well as cogeneration with the use of water treatment waste, wind power and hydrogeneration were among the projects being considered by the company.
The company plans to install 170MW in capacity over the next four years. An expected 950GW hours will be sold to EDP, Portugal’s main power utility.
The projects should become operational in January 2013 and will handle around 900,000 tonnes of waste and residual mud and have a generation capacity of 80MW.
‘If we can fulfil this programme, it will allow the country to avoid importing 2.4 million barrels of oil a year and we'll prevent 480,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted,’ Antonio Branco, head of renewable power projects at AdP, comments.
Around €400 million will be set aside for two cogeneration plants that will use residual mud from water treatment facilities and other waste materials.
AdP already has 26MW of biogas-fired capacity under construction with the aim of reaching 50MW in three years.
