Phibro expands offering of yeast products for ethanol industry

Phibro Ethanol Performance Group, a subsidiary of Phibro Animal Health Corporation, has expanded its portfolio of yeast products to address the needs of a changing ethanol market.

The company provides solutions for ethanol producers based on fermentation, infection management and co-products for animal feed, with products including processing aids, cleaning aids, corn oil recover and proprietary yeast products.

The newest offerings to be added by the company are PhibroADY™ and FortiPhi™ yeast products.

“Ethanol production is a very efficient industry,” explained Michael Giambalvo, president of Phibro Ethanol Performance Group. “The technology keeps improving and lately yeast has been driving those improvements. We understand fermentation, preventing and managing plant infections and the key role of yeast in biofuel production. Yeast has been at the core of Phibro’s businesses for decades.”

PhibroADY has been developed for ethanol production using a particular strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The yeast product is tolerant to high temperatures, organic acids and high gravity substrates, according to the company.

FortiPhi is a specialised nutritional supplement for industrial yeast, which has been designed for grain mash fermentations producing ethanol. The product contains premium organic and inorganic compounds selected to improve the fermentability of standard grain mashes.

“In recent years, the market has shifted,” said Jenny Forbes, vice-president of products and services. “Ethanol producers are more interested in GMO technologies because of the multiple benefits they provide. Producers have recognised the value in yeast that will express enzymes and contribute to higher yields.”

By the end of 2019, Phibro intends to launch a new higher performance yeast, the company added, with initial tests showing promising results for the genetically engineered product.

“We have been a leader in the ethanol production industry for many years, and we’ve been very fortunate to be able to grow with our customers,” added Giambalvo. “This is just the natural progression in providing more solutions to meet the needs of our customers. Phibro’s innovations in yeast will help the industry achieve higher productivity, higher efficiency and process optimisation. If you’re not innovating, you fall behind.”
