Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has completed one of the first commercial biofuel bunkerings for a cruise vessel in Greece, with Norwegian Viva receiving a waste-based marine fuel blend at the port of Piraeus.

The delivery, coordinated by World Fuel Services in collaboration with Greek supplier EKO, highlights how international cooperation is enabling the cruise sector to reduce emissions today. The operation forms part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ biofuel programme across Southern Europe under its Sail & Sustain strategy.

The Piraeus bunkering builds on the company’s previous biofuel trials in Europe, including successful operations in Gibraltar, Copenhagen, and the Amsterdam–Rotterdam–Antwerp (ARA) region, as well as an earlier biofuel delivery in Piraeus on 20 July.

Kimberly Westmoreland, senior director of cruise and energy transition at World Fuel, said: “This collaboration demonstrates how the cruise industry can access certified alternative fuels right now – not someday. By combining our global supply network with strong local execution, we support operators like Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings in making meaningful progress on decarbonisation.”

Lory Urdaneta, senior director of energy strategy at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, added: “This biofuel operation in Piraeus reflects the pragmatic progress we’re making under our Sail & Sustain programme.”

Chrisanthopoulos Konstantinos, manager of marine fuels and services at EKO, said: “By supplying waste-based biofuels locally, we are demonstrating the market’s readiness and the potential for wider adoption across the Mediterranean.”

The operation underlines the growing role of biofuels in maritime decarbonisation and the potential for collaborative approaches to accelerate adoption across key cruise ports in Europe.
