Việt Nam will officially transition to the nationwide use of biofuels from 1 June, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to reduce emissions, strengthen energy security and promote sustainable development.
Under the new policy, biofuel-blended petrol will become the standard fuel sold across the country, replacing conventional fossil-based fuels.
The move forms part of the Vietnamese Government’s broader strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions, support the domestic agricultural sector and align with international climate commitments.
The introduction of biofuels is expected to reduce carbon emissions from road transport, one of the country’s fastest-growing sources of pollution.
Biofuels, which are produced from renewable biological sources, offer a lower-carbon alternative while remaining compatible with existing vehicle technology and fuel distribution infrastructure.
Government authorities have confirmed that fuel producers and distributors are prepared for the transition, with sufficient supply capacity in place to ensure continuity for consumers and businesses.
Public information campaigns have also been rolled out to raise awareness of the benefits of biofuels and address questions related to vehicle performance and fuel quality.
The policy is anticipated to stimulate investment in domestic biofuel production, creating new opportunities for farmers and supporting rural economic development. It also reinforces Việtnam’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
By formally adopting biofuels nationwide, Việtnam joins a growing number of countries implementing practical, near-term solutions to decarbonise transport and advance the transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
