Verbio restarts German plant

German bioenergy company Verbio has restarted its 100,000 tonne/year bioethanol plant in Zorbig in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state as prices have stabilised and demand improved.

'In a generally declining market, the price of bioethanol has stabilised,' says Klaus-Dieter Bettien, general manager of the Zorbig site.

Demand was rising, partly due to an increase in bioethanol blending quotas planned for next year, he adds.

Workers, who had been put on short-time reduced hours in September due to the temporary production stop, will now resume full hours.

Verbio suspended production at the plant last month due to grain feedstock costs and competition from cheaper imported ethanol.

Verbio's Zorbig plant went into operation in 2004.
