US Navy explores the big green sea

In the US, with the Navy’s plans to cut its use of fossil fuel and convert to using biofuels for ships, aircrafts and everything in between, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Navy.

This is a promise between both organisations to work together. The memorandum of understanding has been signed in the hope that this will lead to increased use of biofuels and alternative energy in the military.

The majority of the Navy’s goals will not be put into practice until the year 2015 at the earliest.

However, by 2012 a Green Strike Group will be composed of biofuel-powered nuclear vessels and ships and by 2016 this Strike Group will be sailed as a Great Green Fleet.

The soldiers will be equipped with hybrid electric alternative power systems that run on biofuel, while the aircraft in this fleet will be powered by biofuel.

In ten years’ time the Navy aims to half the total of all energy used by ships, aircraft, tanks and other vehicles.

Shore installations will come from alternative sources and 50% will be net zero energy consumers.
