US economy lift could land green industry $50 billion

In an effort to turn around the turbulent US economy, President-elect Barack Obama could introduce a $500 billion (€380 billion) stimulus package with 10% directed towards renewable energy.

The stimulus plan would spend around half a trillion dollars over two years on tax-rebates and an array of green projects, such as building biomass or co-fired renewable energy plants, and could ramp up the manufacture of flex fuel vehicles.

The US’ big three car manufacturers General Motors, Chrysler and Ford, received a $15 billion cash reprieve in early December. The manufacturers offer flex-fuel vehicles that run on biofuel blends.

Reports were leaked in late November that 92% of the government’s flex fuel fleet of cars, which is supposed to be greener and use ethanol, are fuelled by standard petrol.
