US biodiesel production capacity fell slightly in 2019

Annual US biodiesel production capacity decreased by 2%, or 49 million gallons, between January last year and the start of this year, according to the latest figures.
At the start of this year, biodiesel production capacity in the US totalled 2.5 billion gallons per year, or 164,000 barrels per day, according to the US. Energy Information Administration’s annual US Biodiesel Plant Production Capacity report.
The new report was released at the end of last month.
According to the report there were 91 biodiesel production facilities in the US at the start of 2020.
More than half of the country’s biodiesel production capacity is in the Midwest - mainly in the states of Iowa, Missouri and Illinois.
Of the top 15 biodiesel-producing states, nine are situated in the Midwest and they have a total capacity of 1.5 billion gal/year.
Most other regions have at least a dozen biodiesel production facilities, except for the Rocky Mountain region. As of January 2020, there was only one biodiesel plant operated in the Rocky Mountain region, and it had a production capacity of less than 0.5 million gal/year.
