UOP to construct Hawaii biomass plant

Illinois, US-based Honeywell International subsidiary UOP has chosen picturesque Hawaii as the site of its biomass plant.

UOP will start construction next year at Tesoro Hawaii’s refinery in Kapolei. The plant, which will convert biomass into transportation fuel, is expected to be online in 2014.

The company was awarded a $25 million (€17.6 million) grant from the US Department of Energy (DoE) for construction, salaries and to run the one-year demonstration project.

The federal Energy Department said in December that it had granted $1.3 billion for 19 biorefinery projects in 15 states to launch test projects and build commercial facilities.

Of that amount, $564 million came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The state has a commitment to green energy and accessibility to a variety of feedstocks can be grown year-round.
