UK biofuel plant could bring forward completion date of Norwegian jet fuel factory

Sintef scientists believe the UK's upcoming biofuels plant may influence Norway to bring the planned completion date of its jet fuel factory from 2020 to an earlier date.

British Airways has been working to ensure access to biofuel, also known as biojet, for the aviation industry. The company is working with US biofuels producer Solena Fuels.

On the site of the proposed plant, in Thurrock, Essex, 575 tonnes of pre-treated waste will be converted into 120 tonnes of liquid biofuel and approximately 50 tonnes of this will be biojet fuel.

A factory to produce the Jet A-1 fuel is set to be built at Follum factories outside Honefoss in the south of Norway.

Ragnhild Borchgrenvink, CEO of Viken Skog, says that the British plans do not exclude the possibility of establishing a Norwegian factory, as the need for extensive biofuels demands the production capacity from several locations.
