Sugarcane yield up 5.24% in Brazil

The 2009 production of sugarcane in South-Central Brazil was up 5.24% compared with 2008, in spite of unreasonable rains throughout the majority of the year.

By the end of December, over 523 tons of sugarcane had been harvested, with 10.31 million tons crushed in the second half of December alone.

In January 2008 just 14 companies were in operation, while this rose to 56 in January 2009 due to the plants continuing to grow during the inter-harvest period.

Since the beginning of the harvest, ethanol sales totalled 20.39 billion litres, with 2.11 billion litres of ethanol shipped out during December.

Over 90 companies are thought to be in action throughout January 2010, with some expected to continue crushing until the new harvest begins in March.
