To ensure smooth production operations, the analysis and characterisation of raw materials are at the core of BDI’s R&D activities. In order to produce standard compliant biodiesel from waste-based raw materials, impurities like phosphorus, sulphur and metal compounds must be removed during oil processing or in the final biodiesel purification process.
With biodiesel becoming increasingly important for the transport sector (EU-27 produced around 15 billion litres in 2020, which is about 13 million tons of oil equivalent), the quality standards for biodiesel have grown more stringent over the years. In 2003, the EN 14214 quality standard for biodiesel was introduced across the EU, replacing the national standards in the EU member states.
