SG Biofuels rounds-up jatropha initiative

A Californian company has developed a large-scale jatropha farming initiative in Central America.

SG Biofuels also entered into the first project with the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) to test and enhance sustainability standards for jatropha cultivation.

The SG Biofuels/RSB pilot will evaluate the practicality and usability of RSB sustainability standards applied to a 1,400 acre jatropha community farming model established by SG Biofuels in Guatemala.

‘Through our community farming initiative and pilot with the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels, we’re working to establish a model system for the sustainable production of jatropha that provides economic value to farmers and communities while also hedging out the harvest risk,’ Kirk Haney, president and CEO of SG Biofuels comments.

‘The sustainability insights gained through the pilot will be critical as we deploy large-scale community-farming and plantation projects around the world.’

The plantations were formed in 2009 with initial harvests expected by summer 2010.

The project includes more than 380 farmers in 25 distinct communities. Plantations were established without displacing food crops and on land that was considered unsuitable for food crops.
