SG Biofuels and Life Technologies join for jatropha
In order to advance the development of the sustainable biofuel jatropha, Californian-based companies SG Biofuels and Life Technologies Corporation have become united.
With the ability to grow on adverse lands, this non-edible shrub is found in Central America and posses seeds high in oil that can be used for a variety of bio-based materials.
With the largest library of jatropha genetic material, SG Biofuels is a sustainable plant oil company using genetically improved jatropha and advanced agronomics to produce high-quality crude oil for less than $1.00 (€0.69) per gallon, while Life Technologies has advanced biotechnology and synthetic biology tools.
This partnership will initially see the sequencing of the jatropha curcas genome.
’Sequencing the genome will allow us to rapidly develop region-specific cultivars from the promising traits we’ve already identified’, says Kirk Haney, President and Chief Executive of SG Biofuels.
