RRA plans algae-biodiesel plant

Following a $27 million (€20.2 million) boost from the US Ex-Im Bank Mexican biofuels company Recursos Renovables Alternativos (RRA) plans to begin construction of its first plant to produce biodiesel from algae oil in February.

The financing is used for equipment at the first plant, which will most likely be built in Campeche state, but also could be located near Merida in Yucatan state.

The plant will produce 12 million litres a year of biodiesel, and RRA already has some commitments for product off-take. Construction will take roughly a year and the project will be sited on 13 hectares of land.

Future company plans envision plants with production of up to 190 million litres a year of biodiesel which will require a $273 million investment.

Mexico's president Felipe Calderon inaugurated the country's largest biofuels plant, which uses jatropha as feedstock and has capacity to produce 7.3 million litres a year in November.
